It is speed week in New York State, but you can help yourself out with this gadget that is totally legal in New York State!

Growing up in West Seneca, I always thought that having a radar detector in your car was illegal in New York State, but I did some research and found out that they are perfectly legal.

According to the New York State DMV,

According to Section 397-a of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, a radar detector or a laser detector is prohibited:

  • in any motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 18,000 pounds
  • in any commercial motor vehicle with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds

Now you have to be careful. Radar Jammers are illegal by federal law and could result in heavy fines.

Also, using radar detectors are strictly forbidden on all Military Bases.

The best way to avoid a speeding ticket? Do the speed limit!
