Cuomo Announces How Many Doses of the COVID-19 Vaccine are Expected in WNY

During Governor Andrew Cuomo's briefing on Wednesday, he went into depth about the new COVID-19 vaccine, which is expected to be passed by the FDA on Thursday and will start being distributed by the weekend or early next week. First, the vaccine will need to be reviewed and approved here in New York State.

According to WGRZ, Governor Cuomo says that about 6 million doses will be available nationwide. Half will ship right away, while the other half 21 days later, so those who took the first dose can take the second dose.

New York is expected to receive 170,000 doses on the first allocation.

Governor Cuomo said Western New York is expected to receive 14,500 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. That number was determined based on nursing home residents and their staff, along with high-risk healthcare workers. Each individual hospital will determine who receives the vaccine.

Governor Cuomo also stated the state is currently conducting three COVID-19 operations at once: "managing hospitals, slowing the spread of COVID-19, and the COVID-19 vaccine."

Cuomo says the vaccine will be the "weapon that will win the war."
