COVID-19 cases seem to be increasing all across the state and Omicron has quickly become the dominant variant in New York, according to Governor Kathy Hochul's latest update,

Data today in the GISAID database, the largest repository of SARS-CoV-2 sequences in the world, show the Omicron variant comprised 92.7% of uploaded sequences from NYS between 12/23/21 and 1/5/22. This higher level than that reported yesterday reflects the expected fluctuations in the database with uploading batches of data from sequencing laboratories. It indicates that Omicron continues to circulate at an extremely high level across the state although there may be regional differences.

According to the Centers for Disease Control 61,225, New Yorkers have lost their lives to COVID-19. The Health Electonic Response Data System has reported slightly fewer deaths - 49,029. As of the most recent data reported yesterday, January 6, 2022, there were 130 deaths on January 5.

Most of the counties below are the most populous in the state, so it's not surprising they are on the list.

"Wearing a mask, washing your hands, getting your vaccine, your second dose, your booster - we are not defenseless and these are things you can do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe and healthy. As we make our way through the winter surge, it is important to keep the wellbeing of others in mind. Be mindful of how your actions impact others so we can keep our communities open and thriving." ~ Gov. Hochul
