"Click It Or Ticket" Campaign Underway In New York

This weekend police across New York State will be on the lookout for drivers who are not wearing their seatbelts.

New York State troopers along with police departments across the state will be taking part in the national push for drivers to wear seat belts.

WHAT IS THE "CLICK IT OR TICKET" CAMPAIGN?

U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's seat belt campaign runs from May 22 to June 4, 2023. It started in 1993 and is used to promote the use of seat belts by all passengers in a vehicle.

WHAT IS NEW YORK STATE'S SEAT BELT LAW?

According to the law in New York State, the driver and front seat passenger are required to wear seatbelts. If the driver has a learner’s permit, then every passenger in the car must wear a seatbelt. Also, any passenger under the age of 16 must wear a seatbelt, no matter where they’re seated in the vehicle.

WHAT ARE THE FINES FOR NOT WEARING A SEAT BELT IN NEW YORK?

If you are pulled over not wearing a seat belt you can expect to get a ticket. The driver can be fined $50 and each passenger can be fined anywhere between $25 and $100. Also, the driver can get three points on their driver's license.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WEAR SEAT BELTS?

According to the latest statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2022, around 92% of people wear seat belts when in a vehicle. There was a 9% increase in the usage of seatbelts from 2009 until 2022 and 15,000 lives were saved by wearing a seat belt in 2017.
