It’s clear that cities from coast to coast have been affected by “porch pirates.”

Cities in the Midwest, Northeast, West and Southeast can all be found in the top 10. St. Louis tops the list followed by Minneapolis, Jersey City, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Buffalo, Seattle, Oakland, Orlando and Cincinnati.

California was found to be home to the largest number of cities on the list, not surprising considering that it is the most populous state in the country.

Some of the nation’s largest cities ranked lower on the top 50 list.  New York for example ranked No. 46 and Chicago ranked No. 42.

It’s difficult to determine why the cities cited and others are experiencing high volumes of package theft, however, one factor could be the concentration of wealth within many of the cities. With higher income on hand, consumers might be more likely to order items online.

This study reminds us that it’s important to keep a watchful eye on package deliveries whenever you've ordered online. Thieves have been known to quickly grab packages off porches and doorsteps. Security cameras, shipment tracking as well as requiring a signature for deliveries are ways that consumers can keep their deliveries safe.
