Buffalo Area COVID-19 Cases Climb To Almost 20,000 Over Past Week

According to recently released data by the Erie County Department of Health, COVID-19 cases in the past week have sky-rocketed to almost 20,000. The number of new cases over the past 7 days represents a frightening increase. As of January 8, 2022, there were 19,243 new cases of COVID-19 in the past week.

On December 11, 2021, approximately a month ago, there had been 4,345 cases reported for the previous 7 days. Compared to the positive cases reported as of January 8, 2022, for the past 7 days, it's an increase of 342.877 percent. Also, keep in mind that Erie County does not include positive results from at-home COVID-19 tests.

Compared to the cases reported for the week ending January 1, 13,460, it's an increase of 43 percent. Of the most recent cases, people ages 20 to 39-years-old made up 41.3 percent. Buffalo residents represent about 39 percent of the cases over the 7 days reported on January 8.

The 7-day case rate per 100,000 persons was 2,017, up from 1,411 the previous week. Erie County remains
in "high" COVID-19 transmission per CDC indicators.
