As summer is approaching, many children who do not normally have access to computers will not have that problem this year.

In a letter that was sent home to parents this week, the Buffalo Public School system announced that students will be able to keep their district-provided computing devices for the summer.

So that means kids who have a BPS-supplied laptop, tablet, or iPad will have full access and use of the device throughout the entire summer.

We are excited to let you know that we will be allowing your student to keep their BPS computing device for use throughout the summer. It is our intent to ensure that your child has access to this important educational asset whether they are participating in summer school, Say Yes Programming, or any other community activity.
-Dr. Tonja M. Williams, Interim Superintendent of The Buffalo Public Schools

Students who keep their devices for the summer are expected to bring them back to school with them in September when the next school year begins. As of now, school is scheduled to start again on Tuesday, September 6, 2022.

If the student is not planning to return to Buffalo Public Schools in the fall, then they are not allowed to keep the device over the summer and must return it to one of 5 different return locations. Devices should not be returned to the student's home school.

This is great news for a lot of kids. Many of the young adults who attend school in Buffalo do not have regular access to the internet or computers. The BPS doing this will help reduce the digital divide that exists between our urban and suburban schools in Western New York.
