It seems like every year at Buffalo Bills training camp we see one player coming out of nowhere and lighting it up in practice day after day. You can really say that of any training camp around the NFL.

By all accounts, the one surprise player that is standing out at One Bills Drive is fourth-year wide receiver Jake Kumerow.

Kumerow was on the Bills last season and even caught a great pass from Josh Allen against the Denver Broncos in a game that was played a few days before Christmas.

Kumerow was waived by Buffalo on Christmas Eve in 2020 and then was claimed by the New Orleans Saints. After being released by New Orleans in January, he was re-signed by the Bills to a reserve/futures contract.

Kumerow has been a star at camp and it's easy to see based on tweets. He even beat pro bowl cornerback Tre-Davious White twice at practice on Thursday.

What adds another interesting wrinkle to this Kumerow storyline is that he was a favorite of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers was reportedly furious that the Packers released Kumerow last summer, according to Sal Maiorana of the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle and Rodgers spoke about Kumerow at a press conference with the media last week.

Rodgers said that Kumerow was the second-best receiver in camp last summer and that he would have liked if the Packers "ran it by him" before Kumerow was cut.

Right now, the play from Kumerow in camp has only helped his chance to make the Bills 53-man roster, but it's probably the hardest wide receiving corps in the NFL to make.

The Bills' top five are already a lock to be on the team (Stefon Diggs, Cole Beasley, Emmanuel Sanders, Gabriel Davis, Isaiah McKenzie), so that likely leaves only one spot for another receiver.

Kumerow is competing with others, such as Isaiah Hodgins, Duke Williams, Tanner Gentry, Lance Lenoir, Brandon Powell, and Marquez Stevenson. Some of those guys could be on the practice squad, but it's obviously a tough road for Kumerow to play a role this season.

If he does what he's been doing in camp, in the preseason games though, it will be nearly impossible to keep him off the Bills roster.
