The holiday travel season is here and if you have been to a gas pump lately, you know how crazy the gas prices have gotten. There is a government strategy that may ultimately save you money the next time you fill up your tank.

New York Senator, Chuck Schumer is calling on the Biden Administration to tap in to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to help lower prices.

The reserve is the world's largest supply of emergency crude oil and currently holds roughly 600 million barrels of oil.

“Consumers need immediate relief at the gas pump, and so I am urging the administration to approve fuel sales from the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve,” Schumer, a Democrat who is New York’s senior senator, said at a news conference Sunday.

It doesn’t matter the type of vehicle you drive. It seems that when you go to fill up your tank these days you are looking at at least a $50 charge for the total. But since the pandemic has started to ease back a little bit, more people are driving to work and school and other events and demand is higher than it has been in a while. If you combine that with the supply/shortage issues that we’ve heard about, this makes the prices go higher and higher. Add to that, the ever increasing inflation rate these days and gas prices are soaring across the country.

We have tried to adjust our routine to limit the amount of places that we drive during the week. But part of the problem we have is using our automatic car starter‘s to warm the vehicles when there is cold weather or snow before we go to work or school. It may not seem like a lot but if you run your car 15 minutes in the morning and the evening 5 to 6 days a week, that adds up quickly.

I think more people are going to travel this Thanksgiving than we have seen in a long time. The demand is going to be pretty great as we get ready for the second half of November. Perhaps this strategic move by the government will help save you a little money before you head to grandmas house.
