Today is National Son and Daughter day and I am here to tell you that being the youngest child in the family is the absolute best.

Even though I am 45 years old now, I am still the youngest in my family. I have two older brothers and while when I was younger, I didn't think that being the youngest I have come to appreciate the fact that I am the youngest.

Here is what I learned and why being the youngest was the best.

1. You ALWAYS have protection. Sure my older brothers Ed and Mark would pick on me growing up. But if anyone else did, even their friends they would be right there to help me and defend me. It was like having built-in bodyguards, that would beat you up every once in a while.

2. The Older Siblings Paved A Path. Everything thing my brothers did before me wore down my parents. My parents were really strict with my oldest brother Ed and a little looser with the rules with my middle brother Mark. By the time I got to the age to get into trouble, my parents were like, we don't do hospitals or police stations. I had a lot more freedom to mess around than my brothers.

3. Hand Me Down Clothes. Ok sure having to wear clothes your brothers wore isn't great, but my parents did feel bad that most of my clothes hand me downs, when I really wanted something, like the Reebok Pump sneakers, I would get them.

4. Extra Presents. When you are the youngest you get to pull the strings on your parents and when my brothers celebrated their birthdays in August, I used to throw a fit until I would get a present as well. It was perfect since my birthday is in May.

So as we celebrate National Son and Daughter's day, make sure the youngest child gets that extra present.
