Can we just leave the elderly alone? Please

You may remember when news broke just a few weeks ago about a caregiver in Amherst who stole money from a 94-year-old woman whom she was supposed to be the home health aide for.

According to the Erie County District Attorney’s office, the 31-year-old previous caregiver pleaded guilty in county court to falsifying personal checks on behalf of the elderly woman, admitting to fraudulently obtaining over $35,000 in payments from the 94-year old victim.

Unfortunately, it’s happened again in Western New York – only weeks after the case above. Someone has stolen from several elderly people, racking up an amount of more than $100,000.

The former bank employee from Forestville was sentenced to time in jail this week for stealing money from the accounts of several elderly customers.

Wow…from the accounts?

According to the District Attorney’s office, Breanna Rohauer, 37, admitted to making several unauthorized withdrawals. In total, Rohauer admitted to stealing $124,736 through fraudulent transactions between November 2017 and February 2019 at a bank in the Town of Hamburg.

Rohauer pleaded guilty to six counts of grand larceny in the third degree, a Class D felony, and one count of grand larceny in the fourth degree, a Class E felony.

She has been sentenced to 30 days in jail, followed by five years of probation.

The good news is that all victims were reimbursed by the bank. Rohauer has been ordered to repay full restitution to the bank.
