I’ve been a dog owner almost my entire life. Ever since I was a kid I’ve been caring for dogs and as an adult, my fiancée and I rescued a pitbull/beagle mix in 2018 named Odessa. Best decision we ever made. She's been nothing but amazing and we can't imagine life without her.

So, when I read stories like this (and they’re far too frequent), it breaks my heart in two.

I saw this story on Broadway Fillmore Alive’s website and it’s almost unbelievable.

According to Ben Wild on Facebook a few days ago, he and few volunteers discovered an abused dog who was abandoned in a plastic tote at the Buffalo Central Terminal. The person responsible got away before they could hold them accountable.

Ben and the volunteers gave the dog (they named “Lucky”) some water and cheese puffs. Then, a nice coffee lady named Val donated a meatball sub to Lucky.

She and another volunteer took Lucky down to the Buffalo Animal Shelter and thankfully, he’s expected to make a full recovery. The woman who gave Lucky the meatball sub may even adopt Lucky.

It’s absolutely shocking that anyone could even be capable of this. Leaving an animal for dead like that and at the Buffalo Central Terminal for that matter, which takes effort to go there to abandon a dog. The dog looked very thin and weak too, which makes me angry.

I’m so happy this story had a good ending, but sadly, many don’t. Thank you to these wonderful people who saved this dog’s life.

To prepare yourself for a potential incident, always keep your vet's phone number handy, along with an after-hours clinic you can call in an emergency. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center also has a hotline you can call at (888) 426-4435 for advice.

Even with all of these resources, however, the best cure for food poisoning is preventing it in the first place. To give you an idea of what human foods can be dangerous, Stacker has put together a slideshow of 30 common foods to avoid. Take a look to see if there are any that surprise you.
