They’re Selling Your Information After You Go To The Erie County DMV

You just can't trust anyone anymore. When I go to the store and they want you to sign up for one of their 'rewards clubs', I have a completely different address, phone number and birthdate.

I get a few calls a day and they're all scam calls and I always think that it's because I've signed up for all of these 'programs' or incentives all of the time.

I'm turning 29 this year, which means I have to go to the DMV and get a new licence, which means they'll have fresh new info for New York to sell to companies to make money.

We do not know where this information is going and who these third party contractors are," Kearns said. "I think people want to know who is getting their information and who those third parties are."

Every two years, the state accepts bids from companies looking to acquire registration data. The companies must be licensed, and must be approved by the state.

"DMV does not sell customer names or addresses for marketing purposes," said DMV Spokeswoman Lisa Koumjian. "Social Security Numbers are never sold. Any disclosure of customer data by DMV is in compliance with state law and the federal Driver Privacy Protection Act, which do not allow personal DMV data to be shared for marketing purposes", according to WIVB.
