Ryan Gosling won Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical at the 2017 Golden Globes, because not even the Hollywood Foreign Press Association could resist the delectable charm of the La La Land crooner. The actor won his very first Globe on Sunday night for his role as Sebastian, an ambitious jazz musician in the Damien Chazelle musical.

The film follows Gosling’s Sebastian and Emma Stone‘s Mia, an aspiring actress, as they fall in love and build their paths towards stardom in modern day Los Angeles. Hate it or love it, you can’t deny how easy Gosling makes singing, dancing, acting, and romancing look in the musical. Gosling beat Colin Farrell for The Lobster, Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool, Hugh Grant for Florence Foster Jenkins, and Jonah Hill for War Dogs.

But does Gosling have a shot at the Oscar? In all probability, nope. It’s a good thing the Globes divide up the comedy and drama categories, as this year’s lead actor race is between frontrunners Denzel Washington for Fences and Casey Affleck for Manchester By the Sea.

Last year the Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical went to Matt Damon for The Martian.
