My New Year's Eve tradition from when I was a kid was just called into question.

It probably started when I was 5 or 6.  My mom would make spaghetti and meatballs for my brother and I.  She'd lay a red and white checkered table cloth on the kitchen table, dim the lights, and light a candle stuck inside a wicker-lined Chianti bottle.

The coup de grace was that we also got to have sparkling grape juice.

The other day at Wegmans, I overheard a woman talking to someone in line.  She had 4 bottles of sparkling grape juice, and was saying how her 10 year old daughter was having her first New Year's Eve sleepover, and she was getting the juice to make it fun and festive for them.

The other woman said "Don't you think that's glorifying drinking?  It's like promoting alcohol abuse."

We asked you what you thought, and it seems almost ALL of us either had it as a treat for NYE, or served it to our kids this year.

Sandy / Tonawanda: My parents used to give a a drop of REAL wine and then fill the rest of the glass with clear pop of some kind. None of us are big drinkers now. There goes that theory.

Kayla / Batavia: I think that grape juice and sparkling cider toasts are healthy and fun for kids! Shows them they can do something fun and feel grown up without alcohol . If you're worried about teaching your kids about alcoholism you should be careful about drinking to excess in front of them regularly. Modeling alcoholism as normal behavior is what promotes alcoholism in children.

Stacy/ Buffalo: Absolutely I do not agree...my 10 year old loves sparkling grape juice... Does that mean IBC root beer promotes it too because of the bottle?? Or cans of soda because of the can of beer....totally ridiculous

Michele / Niagara Falls: My ex mother-in-law is a recovered alcoholic. She hasn't had a drink in 20+ years. My 14 year old daughter has spent every New Year's Eve with her since she was born and for probably the past 6-7 years, she has given her sparkling grape juice. It has become a tradition with them. She serves it in those plastic champagne glasses and my daughter loves it and looks forward to that every year. If a recovered alcoholic isn't worried about promoting drinking, I think the lady in Wegmans should just mind her own business!!

 What do you think?
